Corporal Innocent Joseph and Lance Corporal Jacob Gani drove an Acura Jeep into the Dangote Refineries in Lagos, and nearly drove out with 897 armoured cables but for security checks at the gate.
It turned out the two just robbed Africa’s largest refinery, and they never knew it.
The Nigeria Army authorities said on investigation, the two soldiers confessed that a contractor named Smart engaged them.
The smart contractor didn’t tell grunts they were going to rob; he brought them to retrieve some cables that had been left behind at the facility.
But when it became obvious they had run out of luck, Smart left them, and took a walk.
Army spokesperson Major General Onyema Nwachukwu said the two soldiers have been dismissed, and handed over to police for prosecution.
The two first faced trial for what the Army called ‘Failure to Perform Military Duties punishable under section 57, sub-section (1), and Other Civil Offences punishable under section 114, sub-section (1) of the Armed Forces Act CAP A20, the Law of the Federation of Nigeria 2004’
“During the trial, the evidence against them was presented, and they were allowed to present their cases and defend themselves. They were, however, found guilty of the charges leveled against them in accordance with military laws,” the major-general said.
