Nigerian Envoy to Guinea-Bissau Hails Tinubu’s Emergence as ECOWAS Chair

The Nigerian Ambassador to Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde, John James Usanga, has hailed the emergence of President Ahmed Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

President Tinubu on Sunday succeeded Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS.

In a statement made available to journalists on Thursday, Usanga said Tinubu’s emergence at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Governments held at Bissau, Guinea- Bissau, came at a time the region is faced with daunting security challenges that require a proactive and visionary leader like President Tinubu.

According to him, Tinubu’s vast experience and visionary approach to leadership will be very useful to steer ECOWAS towards greater heights of regional integration, socio-economic prosperity and peace.

He said: “President Tinubu’s emergence as the ECOWAS Chair is a reaffirmation of Nigeria’s vital role in the sub region in its pursuit of economic growth, democratic stability, and sustainable development, being the largest economy in Africa.

“President Tinubu’s pragmatic, proactive and exemplary governance record as Governor of Lagos State and his steadfast commitment to democracy and good governance makes him an ideal choice to lead ECOWAS during these trying and pivotal times.

“His extensive political background, both at the National and International levels, will enable him to effectively address the region’s challenges and harness its immense human and natural resources.

“I am confident that with this election, President Tinubu will perform his duties in the best interest of Nigeria and West African to ensure that the sub-region takes its rightful place in Africa and global economic and diplomatic circles.

“I pray that the Almighty God will grant him the wisdom, courage and excellent spirit to stem the tide of military coups in the sub-region, fight climate change, terrorism and other forms of transnational crimes confronting West Africa.”
