Nigeria’s energy landscape is on the brink of a transformation, thanks to Julius Rone, the CEO of UTM Offshore Limited. Rone, a prominent figure in the Nigerian gas industry, is spearheading an ambitious project to construct the nation’s first Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility.
This initiative, set to be completed by 2028, promises to bolster Nigeria’s energy independence and optimize its offshore gas resources.
Pioneering Nigeria’s energy transition
Rone’s vision for the FLNG project is not just about enhancing Nigeria’s energy capabilities; it’s a strategic move towards energy transition. By reducing reliance on imports and tapping into the country’s vast gas reserves, this project aims to position Nigeria as a leader in sustainable energy.
The FLNG facility is expected to supply approximately 450,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) annually to the domestic market, a significant step towards self-sufficiency.
Strategic partnerships for growth
To bring this vision to life, Rone is seeking equity investment from the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB). In a recent meeting with Felix Omatsola Ogbe, the executive secretary of NCDMB, Rone highlighted the project’s potential to drive economic growth, and technology transfer, and contribute to Nigeria’s energy transition.
The collaboration with NCDMB, along with existing partnerships with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the Delta State Government, underscores the broad support for this transformative project.
Leveraging local expertise
A key aspect of the FLNG project is its commitment to Nigerian content development. George Amara, the technical manager of the project, revealed that indigenous engineers and firms are actively involved in various project phases. UTM Offshore’s dedication to utilizing Nigerian fabrication yards for in-country activities is a testament to Rone’s commitment to local expertise and job creation.
