Decades after his death, Notorious B.I.G. remains a legend in the hip-hop world. He helped bring rap music to the American masses in an important way in the ‘90s, and his legacy not only lives on to this day, but his work is still immensely popular among millions.
Notorious B.I.G. returns to a pair of Billboard charts this week with one of his biggest singles. The tune racked up enough sales in the past tracking period to find its way back to several lists, even becoming a top 10 smash once again in the U.S.
“Hypnotize” blasts back onto both the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales and Rap Digital Song Sales charts this week. The single can be found at No. 12 on the former and No. 10 on the latter. The second tally only features 10 spaces these days, so appearing anywhere on the roster means any track instantly becomes a top 10 hit all over again.
B.I.G.’s time-tested single isn’t new to either of the sales rankings it appears on this frame. It’s now racked up 15 stays on the more all-encompassing R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales chart. Over on the Rap Digital Song Sales list, it’s earned 23 stints.
“Hypnotize” was the last single that B.I.G. released during his lifetime, as he was shot and killed just days after it came out. Fans sent the tune straight to No. 1 on the Hot 100, posthumously granting the rapper his first leader on the chart.
As “Hypnotize” becomes a bestseller again, the rapper also climbs on another chart. He pushes his Greatest Hits compilation seven spaces up the Billboard 200, landing at No. 150.
In the past tracking week, B.I.G.’s Greatest Hits shifted just over 9,600 equivalent units. That’s up more than 3% from the period before, and the ongoing success of “Hypnotize” may have played a major role in the title’s ascent. Consumption of all tracks on a set like a greatest hits collection helps the project on its respective tallies, as well as the tune itself.
