NYPD Poised To Revoke Donald Trump’s Gun License Following Conviction

Topline

The New York Police Department is expected to pull former President Donald Trump’s gun license, according to multiple outlets, a routine action that would be taken following Trump’s conviction on 34 felony charges of falsifying business records during his hush money trial in New York last week.

Key Facts

Trump’s concealed carry license was already suspended at the start of April 2023, following his indictment, according to CNN, which noted two of three of his licensed pistols were turned over to the NYPD on March 31, 2023, with the remaining handgun listed on his license listed as “lawfully moved to Florida.”

The completion of an NYPD legal bureau investigation will “likely” lead to the revocation of Trump’s gun license, CNN reported, citing a senior police official, though Trump could request a hearing appealing the revocation.

A representative for Trump didn’t immediately respond to Forbes’ request for comment.

Tangent

If Trump were to continue to remain in possession of the gun moved to Florida, that could be a violation of a federal and Florida gun law prohibiting convicted felons from possessing a firearm, and carrying maximum sentences between 10 and 15 years in prison.

Key Background

Trump’s conviction on 34 felony charges of falsifying business records made him the first president, former or sitting, to be criminally convicted. Each of the 34 counts is punishable by up to four years in prison and/or a maximum fine of $5,000. In total, he faces up to 136 years in prison and $170,000 in fines, though experts believe it is unlikely Trump serves time as a first-time offender. Trump, who has full-time protection from the U.S. Secret Service, even if he were imprisoned, is likely to appeal his conviction. His sentencing is scheduled for July 11—three days before the start of the Republican National Convention.
