Upgrade—an obscure sci-fi tech thriller from 2018—has gotten a power boost from Netflix viewers.
The R-rated Upgrade marks the latest in a string of movies that have been given new life following their low-profile theatrical releases—if they had theatrical releases at all.
As such, Netflix viewers have made such films as Mel Gibson’s twisty thriller On the Line and Jenna Ortega’s provocative psychological drama Miller’s Girl big hits on Netflix’s Top 10 Global and/or U.S. Movies charts in recent months.

According to the streaming service, Upgrade debuted on the Netflix Global Top 10 Global Movies chart for the week of May 13-19 at No. 6. With 2.9 million views, which equates to 4.9 million viewing hours.
The strong global debut of Upgrade was enough to surge its way onto the Netflix U.S. Top 10 Movies chart with a No. 4 debut.
What is ‘Upgrade’ About?
Set in 2046, Upgrade tells the story of Grey Trace (Prometheus and Spider-Man: Homecoming star Logan Marshall-Green), a technophobic auto mechanic who becomes a quadriplegic after he is attacked and his wife, Asha (Melanie Vallejo), is murdered by four vicious criminals.
Grey gets new hope, however, when he is approached by billionaire tech innovator Eron Keen (Harrison Gilbertson). Eron implants what he’s dubbed the STEM computer chip at the base of Grey’s spine, which restores all of man’s motor functions.
Grey’s tech “upgrade” however, comes with a bonus, as the chip gives him unusual strength, reflexes and speed, which sends him on a path of vengeance to find his wife’s killers.

Produced under Jason Blum and Blumhouse’s B/H Tilt banner and directed by Saw and Insidious co-creator Leigh Whannell, Upgrade made a quiet impact at the box office in 2018.
According to box office tracker The Numbers, Upgrade—which had a $3 million production budget—earned nearly $17 million at the worldwide box office, with nearly $12 million of that take coming from domestic ticket sales.
Upgrade also had a stellar reception from Rotten Tomatoes critics, earning a “fresh” 88% rating based on 192 reviews, and a positive 88% Audience score based on 5,000-plus verified user ratings.
Also starring Betty Gabriel (Get Out) Upgrade is streaming on Netflix.
