Paul Pogba and 5 Other Footballers Banned for Doping Violations
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In the world of football, doping violations are taken very seriously. Paul Pogba, the renowned midfielder, is the latest high-profile player to face the consequences. Pogba has been handed a four-year ban from football after testing positive for high levels of testosterone on September 11, 2023.

The ban, if upheld, could significantly impact his career, sidelining him until 2028 when he will be 34 years old. Pogba has maintained his innocence, stating that he was unaware the supplement he was consuming contained testosterone. This situation has put his future with Juventus in jeopardy, as the club has proposed terminating his contract if he is found guilty after a counter-analysis.

This incident has brought the issue of doping in football back into the spotlight, highlighting the strict measures in place to maintain the integrity of the sport. Let’s take a look at a few footballers who suffered the same fate.

Diego Maradona

Aside from Paul Pogba, the late Diego Maradona, one of the greatest footballers of all time, had his career marred by doping issues. He was sent home from the 1994 World Cup after failing a drug test for ephedrine. Earlier, in 1991, Maradona received a 15-month ban for testing positive for cocaine while playing for Napoli.

His doping controversies didn’t end there, as he faced another ban in 1997. Maradona’s legendary status was tainted by these incidents, underscoring the impact of doping violations on a player’s legacy.

Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola, now celebrated for his managerial success, faced a doping scandal during his playing days. In 2001, while playing for Brescia in Serie A, Guardiola tested positive for nandrolone, leading to a four-month suspension. Guardiola always maintained his innocence, and in 2009, he won an appeal against his conviction. This episode serves as a reminder that doping allegations can affect players at any level of their career.

Rio Ferdinand

Away from the former Manchester United player, Paul Pogba, Rio Ferdinand, the Manchester United legend, found himself in hot water in 2004 after missing a drug test. His oversight resulted in an eight-month ban from football, causing him to miss the 2004 Euros. This incident highlighted the importance of adhering to doping control procedures, even if it’s simply being present for a test.

Andre Onana

Andre Onana, the talented goalkeeper, faced a setback in his career when he was banned for nine months in 2021. The ban, initially set at 12 months, was reduced by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Onana claimed he accidentally took his wife’s medication, which contained the banned substance Furosemide. This incident serves as a cautionary tale about the strict liability principle in anti-doping regulations.

Samir Nasri

Samir Nasri’s career took a hit when he was handed an 18-month ban for receiving a 500-milliliter infusion, violating the World Anti-Doping Agency’s (WADA) limit of 50 milliliters in six hours. Nasri’s ban, which was backdated to July 1, 2017, ended in December 2018. He made a comeback to professional football with West Ham United, highlighting the possibility of redemption after serving a doping ban.

Conclusively, these cases of Paul Pogba and other footballers banned for doping violations underscore the importance of maintaining clean and fair play in the sport. Doping not only tarnishes the reputation of individual players but also undermines the integrity of football as a whole.
