Polygon aims to completely usher in its next phase before the end of 2024
The complete evolution will help the protocol measure how the coming together of multiple scaling networks can interact through zero-knowledge proofs
Ethereum scaling layer Polygon intends to fully transition to its next phase, Polygon 2.0, in 2024, according to the protocol’s co-founder Jordi Baylina. Baylina believes the arrival of Polygon 2.0 will act as a test on whether an interconnection of multiple layer 2 platforms can increase their scalability and integration through zero-knowledge proofs or ZK-proofs. The co-founders’ revelations come a month after the platform’s new base token, POL, went live, a sign that Polygon is committed to becoming the value layer of the internet.
Sharing Liquidity and Composability
Speaking to Cointelegraph, the Polygon co-founder said that they plan to focus more on interconnecting all scaling layers on the Polygon ecosystem, a phenomenon that will allow them to share “liquidity [and] composability.”
According to Baylina, the interconnection of different platforms will be a notable milestone for the protocol since some projects in the ecosystem have their own tokens and other independent features.
Ushering in Polygon 2.0 involves several upgrades to the network, a process that the network started with the release of improvement proposals three months ago. Baylina noted that the protocol has achieved great things in 2023 such as the welcoming of the zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) and the release of a chain development kit (CDK).
From Layer One Status to Layer Two
The Polygon CDK has increased the number of scaling networks in the Polygon ecosystem. Celo blockchain, for example, has indicated that it’s abandoning its layer 1 status to become an Ethereum scaling layer powered by Polygon.
Other platforms like Palm Network have already moved to Polygon to reduce costs. However, it hasn’t been a smooth path for the scaling layer with controversies around secretly funding DraftKings and its former president joining rival network Optimism.
Although Baylina is confident of the arrival of Polygon 2.0 in 2024, the actual timelines for when these will happen are yet to be disclosed.
