Five pro-Nyesom Wike commissioners serving under the Sim Fubara-led government in Rivers State have tendered their resignation today, May 15, citing “loss of trust, animosity and sharp division among colleagues.”
Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, have been embroiled in a power tussle since the former governor installed Fubara allegedly because he wanted to continue governing the state by proxy.
The Pro-Wike Commissioners
As the Rivers political climate heats up, the five commissioners were pressured out of Fubara’s cabinet. They include Prof. Chinedu Mmom, Commissioner for Education, and Ben-Golden Chioma, Commissioner for Environment.
Others are Dr Gift Worlu, Commissioner for Housing, Dr. Jacobs Nbina, Commissioner for Transportation, and Mrs. Inime Chinwenwo Aguma, the Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation.
According to Mmom, the “current workspace has become toxic and no longer guarantees a favourable environment to enable me realise my set targets for the Education sector in the State.”
“There is a loss of trust, animosity, and sharp division among colleagues in the same cabinet which is unhealthy and very unfortunate. I want to thank Your Excellency for the opportunity to serve in your cabinet and wish your administration well,” he wrote in his resignation letter which he said takes effect immediately.
Similarly, in a video circulating on social media, Fubara was seen threatening fire and brimstone on Wike and his loyalists, although he didn’t mention names the intended recipient of his message was clear as day.
He also threatened to set up a panel of inquiry to investigate Wike’s administration in River State and expose any atrocity committed under his boss’ watch.

The Backstory
It was alleged that when Fubara took over as Governor, Wike handed him a list of special advisers, commissioners, and their respective portfolios to the Governor.
According to an inside source cited by Punch, most of all the aides, including security officers currently in Fubara’s cabinet were appointed by Wike to spy on the administration and that’s why they are resigning now that their boss has lost the grip on the state.

“Even security agents were handed over to the governor with clear instructions on where to post them.,” the source said. “Let those who want to go leave and the governor will assemble members of his team, and not moles planted to spy on the administration.”
President Bola Tinubu had brokered a peace deal between the two parties but that accord has since broken down and it’s unclear if the president will intervene again or stay clear of the matter and let it play out naturally as Fubara’s posture suggests he’s not open to any presidential intervention.
