South Africa Steps Back from 2027 Women’s World Cup Hosting Bid

South Africa Steps Back from 2027 Women’s World Cup Hosting Bid

South Africa has officially stepped back from its bid to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, the country’s football association (SAFA) announced on Friday. Instead, they have set their sights on preparing a comprehensive bid for the 2031 tournament, emphasizing the importance of presenting a well-prepared proposal.

SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao explained the decision, stating, “We felt that it was better to present a well-prepared bid for the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup and ensure we put our best foot forward, rather than producing a rushed presentation.”

This development leaves three contenders in the race for the 2027 Women’s World Cup: a joint bid from Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands; a bid from Brazil; and a joint bid by Mexico and the United States. The FIFA Congress is scheduled to make the final decision on the hosts on May 17, 2024.

The decision by South Africa comes amid growing anticipation and controversy surrounding the Women’s World Cup’s host selection. With the tournament just four years away, there’s a notable contrast to the men’s World Cup, where hosts for 2026, 2030, and even 2034 have already been announced. Canada, Mexico, and the United States will co-host the men’s World Cup in 2026.

Australia and New Zealand successfully hosted the 2023 Women’s World Cup, with Spain emerging as the champions. The bidding process for the 2027 World Cup will continue, with FIFA confirming the hosts in May 2024, merely three years before the tournament kicks off.

South Africa’s strategic decision to withdraw from the 2027 bid reflects their commitment to presenting a robust proposal for the 2031 Women’s World Cup, setting the stage for an exciting and competitive bidding process in the world of football.
