Statistics will Play Major Role in Tinubu’s 8-Point Agenda – Bagudu

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, has said statistics would play a vital role in assessing the implementation of the Federal Government’s 8-Point Agenda.

He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has taken steps to strengthen the statistical system which he said is paramount to evaluate the current position and subsequent progress of the administration.

Bagudu spoke in Abuja while declaring open the National Stakeholders’ Workshop on the production of National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) Phase III, 2024-2028.

Bagudu who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mr. Neboliseh Akoh, commended the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for organising the workshop which is geared towards drawing a development roadmap for the country through a reliable statistical system.

“As we move forward, we acknowledge the importance of collaboration and synergy among all stakeholders. The successful implementation of the NSDS relies on your expertise, dedication, and commitment.

“We must work together to build a robust and responsive statistical system that supports the aspirations and well-being of our people. I encourage everyone present today to actively engage in the discussions, share your insights, and contribute towards the production of the NSDS, 2024-2028. Your inputs are invaluable, and it is through your collective efforts that we will chart a path towards a stronger and more responsive Nigerian Statistical System.

“I am indeed delighted to note that this event was planned to assess the National Statistical System, harness inputs and proffer recommendations for the production of the National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (NSDS) in Nigeria, 2024-2028.

“As you are all aware, the NSDS is a globally-recognised framework for statistical development, serving as the backbone of evidence-based decision-making, policy formulation, and national development. Over the years, the NSDS has played an instrumental role in enhancing the quality, relevance, and accessibility of statistical data in Nigeria. It has also provided the necessary guidance for the systematic and coordinated development of statistical activities in our great nation.

“Today, as we embark on the development of the new NSDS for 2024-2028, our objectives are clear as we seek to further transform our statistical system, expanding its reach and capacities,” the Minister said.

He said further that the new NSDS will bridge existing gaps and challenges, setting the stage for a unified, integrated, and comprehensive data production system that accurately reflects the country’s current realities.

“It is our collective endeavour to ensure that the new NSDS not only addresses the strategic issues of the past five years but also anticipates and adapts to the evolving statistical landscape.

“This phase of the NSDS, Phase III (2024-2028), has immense significance for our country as we continue our journey towards transforming the Nigerian Statistical System (NSS) to grow the national economy and society at large.

“The need to enhance the effectiveness of our statistical system has been of persistent concern for successive governments, and with the intervention of the NSDS, we have made significant progress in this regard.

“Finally, I would like to express my profound gratitude to all stakeholders, Development Partners, and other participants who have joined us in this endeavour. I look forward to witnessing the transformative impact of the NSDS Phase III on our statistical system and its vital role in Nigeria’s development.

“Together, we shall ensure that our statistical landscape not only meets international standards but also fulfils the unique requirements of our beloved country,” the Minister added.
