Suicide Squad ISEKAI
DC
While we may have about four different iterations of Harley Quinn now between Margot Robbie, the Arkham games, the Max animated series and the upcoming Lady Gaga Joker 2 version, we’re going to have to add another one. But this may be the most interesting of all.
On Monday, a new trailer for Suicide Squad ISEKAI dropped, an upcoming anime series starring Harley Quinn and the Joker. It’s made by Warner Bros. Japan and WIT Studio. The character design is from the famed Akira Amano.
At first, the trailer is the usual Harley and Joker antics captured in a gorgeous animation style, but midway through the spot things take a…turn. Harley soon finds herself in some sort of fantasy landscape with flying islands, dragons and armored knights.
This is the Isekai part, a Japanese term popular in anime where a protagonist is warped to another world other than their own. This often leads them to become a hero in the new realm, either through their innate abilities or things they possessed before that offer them power over enemies in the new realm. In Harley’s case I guess that would be her…bat skills?
Here’s the description of the series which is about as good as I could hope for:
“Deadly crazy party of the baddest villains land themselves in ISEKAI!!! The most dangerous & bizarre fantasy adventure unveiled…!!!
DC’s Harley Quinn and The Joker have been ISEKAI!? Suicide Squad rampages onto the stage of ISEKAI! A new original animation from Japan! The most maddening worlds collide in an epic and violent fantasy with the strongest line-up of creators!”
What I’m a little unclear about is that if is not Harley Quinn ISEKAI and is instead Suicide Squad ISEKAI, who else is going? Is Joker in the Suicide Squad this time? Are there other members we’ve seen across two films now? We do see Amanda Waller briefly, so I’m wondering if this a “we’re sending you into a portal to another dimension where you will probably die but if not you must complete this mission for us” kind of thing.
One thing we do not have is a release date or a release window. We will hopefully get that soon, as this looks incredibly fun, and judging by the fact that it’s racked up 400,000 views in the first seven hours of release, everyone seems to want to see it.
