Three Republican-led congressional committees drafted a document late last year slamming President Joe Biden for his handling of the Ukraine war.
Weeks after it was drafted, the GOP blocked an emergency spending bill that would have sent more US aid to Ukraine.
Biden is “mishandling the worst war in Europe since World War II,” the chairmen of the House foreign affairs, armed services, and intelligence committees wrote in the document titled “Proposed Plan for Victory in Ukraine.”
“His weakness failed to deter Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, continues to prolong the war, and risks inviting further aggression from America’s adversaries,” it continued.
The plan was drafted in November but didn’t start making the rounds until this week, according to the Ukrainian news sites Pravda and The Kyiv Post.
On December 6, Republicans tanked a spending bill that would have provided $50 billion in additional aid to Ukraine and $14 billion in aid to Israel, The New York Times reported last month.
House and Senate Republicans demanded more concessions from the Biden administration in exchange for supporting the bill, primarily related to immigration reform and border security.
The vote came despite Biden’s pledge to offer “significant compromises” if Republicans agreed to pass the bill.
He didn’t mince words when the measure failed to pass.
“Make no mistake: Today’s vote’s going to be long remembered, and history is going to judge harshly those who turned their backs on freedom’s cause,” he said at a news conference shortly before the vote, adding that Republicans were “willing to literally kneecap Ukraine on the battlefield and damage our national security in the process.”
Congressional leaders reached an initial deal on funding the government through 2024 on Sunday, but they have yet to hash out the details of emergency spending packages for Ukraine and Israel.
