The University of Waikato has responded to growing demand for fintech specialists with a new three-year bachelor programme.

Waikato Management School pro vice-chancellor Matt Bolger said the university was offering a bachelor of banking, finance and technology (BBFinTech) to meet the demand.

“The world of finance runs on digital technology,” Bolger said, adding the university had been developing the programme over the past two years and will be accepting enrolments for the upcoming year.

“Nothing happens without digital. Yet no undergraduate degree in New Zealand currently recognises the need for these dual competencies.”

Bolger said there was an unmet demand for people who understand open banking, digital currencies and related technologies.

“There is huge growth potential in this sector, so for students interested in tech who are interested in a career in an exciting sector, this is definitely a path to consider.”

Bolger said the university was hoping to get 30 to 40 enrolments in the first year, welcoming New Zealand and international students into the programme.

He said the university may eventually offer a graduate programme in finance and technology.
