The Enquirer understands subbies across all trades are being asked to discount 10% off their bills for existing contracts from January and all new work going forward.
One subcontractor said: “It was made pretty clear that if we can’t do this they’ll find other firms that can.”
Another specialist said Vistry is suggesting that savings can be made in the price of labour rather than slashing subcontractors’ margins.
He said: “That’s easier said than done in the current labour market and I’m not sure how that sits in the drive for quality house builders bang on about either.
“It’s the same old cycle once again.
“Everyone talks about improving standards and quality then as soon as the market starts tightening it’s all about cost cuts.
“I’m sure they will find some subbies who will come in at a cheaper price but at what cost in the long term?”
