What to expect from AI in 2024

As we approach the horizon of 2024, the stage is set for a pivotal period in the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI).

Anthony Abdulla, Senior Director of Product Marketing for Intelligent Automation at Pega, steps into the spotlight to guide us through the transformative journey that AI and automation are poised to undertake in the coming year. This era promises not only new possibilities but also novel challenges, extending beyond technology into the realms of legality, ethics, and societal impact.

AI and low code unveil a unified front

In 2024, the synergy between AI and low code is poised to redefine the technological landscape. No longer content with standalone low-code solutions, businesses are witnessing a paradigm shift as generative AI takes center stage.

Anthony: AI is set to revolutionize the low code landscape in 2024, transforming it like never before. While previously, businesses were successfully implementing and using low-code solutions, as AI continues to make headlines, these low code-only solutions face serious disruption and will no longer get the job done. With the incorporation of generative AI, the stage is set for the rise of high-end, enterprise-grade low-code solutions, unlocking new opportunities and immense value for business users to elevate their use of low-code and AI across their business. At the end of the day, if your low-code solution doesn’t integrate AI, you’ll be left in the dust.

AI will empower citizen developers

Contrary to the notion that large language models (LLMs) will supersede low code, 2024 envisions AI as an enabler, propelling citizen developers to new heights.

“Some organizations have proposed putting AI to work generating code as a means of fixing gaps in their app development processes. And while the prospect of what AI can do is exciting, this approach will result in less robust applications, higher technical debt, and greater cost and risk to clients. Rather than having AI generate massive amounts of what can be, in many cases, flawed custom code, and creating apps that will only get worse over time, 2024 is the year we should set our sights on super-powering low-code app development with AI. We’ll see AI making low-code development even more intuitive, lowering the bar for business users to create their own intelligent business processes and pushing citizen development further than ever before.”

Rise of low-code fusion teams

The emergence of low-code fusion teams is anticipated in 2024, driven by the integration of AI into low-code platforms.

“In 2024, the role of fusion teams will gain prominence, driven by the integration and proliferation of AI into low-code platforms. Despite many advancements brought about by low code, it doesn’t eliminate the necessity for cross-fuctional planning, control, oversight, and cost management in app development. A melding of both business and IT under shared management and a common set of governance principles will be more essential than ever to ensure AI-infused low-code development scales in a secure and manageable fashion. Fusion teams will be instrumental in uniting business and IT leaders with deep domain experience so they can work together and ensure the accuracy and efficacy of AI-generated content within the low-code environment. The limitations of AI in understanding unstructured data highlight the significance of the need to unite cross-fuctional roles, as they will ensure the quality and precision of AI-produced content.

“Consequently, we’ll see a surge in AI-related jobs and a shift in quality assurance practices throughout the tech industry. This shift is propelled by the need to uphold quality, security, and compliance in AI-enhanced low-code applications. Low-code builders of all levels will need to come together and lead this transformation, as their combined knowledge will be critical in maintaining the highest standards of performance and reliability.”

Convergence of Automation and AI

In 2024, the convergence of process mining, task mining, automation, advanced decisioning, and AI will herald the realization of the autonomous enterprise.

“Infusing process mining and task mining with automation and advanced decisioning and AI will finally bring digital transformation full circle in 2024. These technologies will no longer operate as separate entities, but will combine to power and drive autonomy . Enterprises that bring AI and automation together under one common business architecture to deliver connected outcomes across their customers, agents, and back-office employees. Connecting work from disparate processes and systems and infusing it with automation and intelligence will enable the agility that businesses desperately need to keep pace with digital transformation as AI technologies continue to evolve.”

Era of the self-optimizing enterprise

2024 is foreseen as the year of the self-optimizing enterprise, witnessing the convergence of AI, workflow automation, and process mining.

“With the convergence of AI, workflow automation, process mining, and more, 2024 will be the year businesses bring together technology in a way that applies intelligence across the entire organization to become more effective and intelligent over time – more than we’ve ever seen before. We’ll see leaders place a bigger emphasis on improving business value, and more investments in ways to optimize processes to deliver the best possible experience to customers while improving experiences for employees. When done right, many business processes will evolve from manual, tedious and unmanaged, to automated and intelligent, creating a self-optimizing business environment that benefits employees and customers alike.”
