However, WhatsApp’s latest blog post reveals that starting from October 24, 2023, the app will cease to work on devices running Android 4.x or older. Consequently, the instant messaging platform will exclusively cater to smartphones operating on Android Lollipop or more recent versions. Notably, JioPhone and JioPhone 2 users need not worry, as WhatsApp will remain functional on these devices, given their KaiOS foundation.

It’s crucial to note that the verification process for WhatsApp necessitates the ability to receive SMS or calls, making it impossible to set up new accounts on Wi-Fi-only devices.

WhatsApp has clarified that its decision to discontinue support for specific devices hinges on a combination of factors, including the age of the software and its user base. The aim is to ensure that the app runs smoothly on supported devices.

Before any operating system is phased out, WhatsApp pledges to notify users well in advance, providing them with upgrade reminders to facilitate a seamless transition.

Some of the older devices set to lose WhatsApp support include the Galaxy S2, LG Optimus G Pro, Motorola Droid Razr, Sony Xperia S2, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and LG Optimus 2X. Given that most of these devices are nearly a decade old, the impact on a substantial number of users is expected to be minimal.
