Eighteen holes, 100 players armed with clubs, many teeing off at once. It doesn’t always happen like that on a course. Except when diplomacy meets members of the upper crust for fun.
This is the second of its edition at the Ikoyi Golf Club.
The first edition, the organisers said, brought fun and freshness to the club members and the diplomatic community participated last year. The 2024 edition of the South African Golf Tourney promises more on April 28.
The South African Consulate General in Lagos in collaboration with Crossflex International are organizing this to mark the 30th anniversary of the Rainbow Nation’s freedom and democracy. It also marks the 30th year of unbroken diplomatic relations between South Africa and Nigeria.
Tolu Adesemowo, Managing Director of Crossflex said there was a compelling need for it to make a return.
So golfers, male and female, 100 amateurs, will duke it out under the Stableford scoring system at the Ikoyi Club 1938. The format includes a “short-gun” tee-off. All the players start simultaneously from each of the 18 holes to manage the large number.
Professor Bobby Moroe, the Consul General of South Africa in Lagos, couldn’t help appreciating the partnership that is making this tourney happen.
“Sports diplomacy, in particular, golf, is a crescendo to harness partnerships and promote enduring relationships amongst the golfing community,” Mooresaid.
Geregu Power PLC, Qshop, Pepsi, Acutech, Kaldi Africa, and Simplygolf Apparel are bankrolling the event.
All the players stand the chance to win something, including longest drive, nearest to the pin, and 30th place finish.
