Why Tesla Dominates — Model Y Plus The Plug

Why Tesla Dominates — Model Y Plus The Plug

What a difference. Charging at a Tesla Supercharger in suburban Philadelphia was a breeze compared … [+] to the other network.

The best-selling Model Y is a great car. But it’s the Tesla Supercharger network that seals the deal.

I went from charging hell to heaven in 24 hours. As of Saturday of last week I was stuck using the other fast charging network. Sunday I switched to Superchargers.

It’s like moving from a Motel 6 to the Ritz Carlton. Like being bumped up from economy to first class. Whatever analogy works here.

I had been driving a non-Tesla EV in Los Angeles and using a competing CCS fast charging network until Saturday. That charging network is plagued by inoperable chargers, long wait times, and cranky customers.

Now I’m on the east coast driving a Model Y. First thing I did was stop by the nearest Supercharger location where I am staying in suburban Philadelphia.

Tesla Supercharger just works. And it’s very fast.

Lots of Superchargers

There I counted 18 Superchargers. (A far cry from the best-case six chargers on the competing network.) No broken chargers, no slow charging rates, no lines, no pissed off patrons. Everyone’s happy.

When I plugged in, the charging rate shot up to 250kW and above. And I was fully charged and on my way in less than 15 minutes. That rarely happens on a non-Tesla charging network. There’s often one or more of the obstacles cited above conspiring to make your charging experience miserable.

And about the Model Y

Now I understand why the Model Y has become the best selling car in California, beating the likes of Toyota.

The Model Y I’m driving is gorgeous, quiet, nimble, absurdly fast, comfortable, and brimming with the kind of tech that makes a Tesla a Tesla.

A couple things I like that I don’t have on my other EV…You can voice-command almost anything. From opening the glove box to getting directions. That helps when you’re driving and need to keep your eyes on the road. And Sentry mode is one of those things that you didn’t know you needed until you have it.

But the charging experience is what stands out. General Motors, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Toyota et al are up against an EV juggernaut with an unbeatable charging network. Even when the other car companies are able to plug into the Tesla charging network that won’t guarantee success because it’s the Model Y plus the network that seals the deal.
