10 Tricks That Will Help You Make Your Kitchen Look More Spacious

On the Internet, you can find lots of tips on how to make your kitchen more spacious. But most of them involve expensive renovation works including replacement of the flooring, demolishing walls, buying new appliances and other costly things. We decided to find out whether we can make the kitchen visually larger without investing a lot of money. Turns out it is possible.

Arrange decorative items on top of the cabinets.

Vertical lines on walls or furniture help to make the room look more spacious. But if you don’t have the money (or the desire) to replace or paint furniture, you can use a little trick. By placing baskets, bottles, beautiful crockery on top of the cabinets, you’ll draw attention to the upper part of the room and achieve the same effect. The main thing is that these decorations should match the style of your interior.

Hang a mirror.

Reflective surfaces make a room feel more spacious. We often use this trick in the bedroom or living room, but not so often in the kitchen. You can cover the splashback with reflective film, but it’s easier to just hang a mirror on one of the walls. The main thing is to place it away from the hob and sink.

Replace chairs with stools.

Our eyes automatically stop on any vertical surfaces. If dark chairs with high backs are placed around the table, the room immediately seems smaller. To get rid of this feeling, you can replace chairs with backless stools or chairs with transparent plastic backs.

Freshen up your tiles.

Horizontal lines in soft light colors visually expand the space. There is no need to get rid of old dark tiles and replace them with new ones to achieve this effect. You can simply paint them.

Epoxy, enamel, and special water-resistant paints work best for tiles. It is worth taking into account the fact that you should prepare tiles for painting, and that the paint can crack over time. But this is still easier and cheaper than replacing old tiles with new ones.

Paint your kitchen in the right colors.

If the whole interior is made in the same color scheme (preferably light-colored), the room will look larger. Therefore, it is best to stay away from bright or contrasting furniture. And if you are not ready to buy new furniture, you can simply repaint the old one.

By the way, the illusion of a larger space and high ceilings can be created by painting furniture in 2 shades. Use a darker color on the base units and a lighter one on the upper cabinets.

Choose the right paintings and rugs.

The problem of low ceilings can be solved with vertical lines. And you don’t have to cover the walls with striped wallpaper, just pick up a few decorative elements, like photos, paintings, curtains, that create a similar illusion. The same trick can be pulled with the floor by placing striped carpets on it.

The lights should be as close to the ceiling as possible.

Lighting can be used to visually enlarge or reduce the size of your kitchen. Ideally, the lights should be located as close to the ceiling as possible, otherwise they will “divide” the space and overload it. That’s why you should get rid of massive lampshades and chandeliers.

By the way, there is no need to limit yourself to one source of light. The more different lights there are in the kitchen, the better.

Opt for open shelving.

Experts advise replacing some of the cabinets with open shelves to visually enlarge the kitchen. But for starters, you can choose a less radical option and simply remove the doors from the cabinets. If you don’t like the result, you can always mount the doors back in place.

Unfortunately, neither of the options will work for cluttered cabinets. The feeling of free space only appears when there is a minimum of stuff on the shelves.

To make the kitchen look bigger, you can replace the large and bright handles on the doors and drawers with small and neutral-colored ones. Or get rid of them altogether by installing special magnetic latches.

Get rid of the heavy curtains.

Natural light makes any room look more spacious. And even though it is impossible to make the window bigger, you can remove any obstacles that prevent the sunlight from entering the room. If you feel fine about keeping your windows curtainless, get rid of them altogether. If it’s not an option for you, hang see-through or light-colored blinds which will allow light to pass through, but will help you not to be on display.

By the way, here are a few tricks how to make your interior unique.
