10 Upcoming Korean Films to Watch in 2024

Looking forward to titles including ‘My Name Is Loh Kiwan,’ ‘Escape,’ ‘Uprising,’ ‘The Great Flood,’ and more

Notable Korean films like Alienoid 2: Return to the Future, Badland Hunters, and Exhuma have kicked off this year, and we are in for more amazing stories in the months ahead. Looking forward to the following: 10 upcoming Korean films in 2024.

My Name Is Loh Kiwan – Kim Hee-jin

Song Joong-ki plays the titular role in My Name Is Loh Kiwan as a North Korean defector who flees to Belgium for a chance at life. His stay in Belgium lies at the mercy of its authorities, who could grant him refugee status. This sets off an uphill battle for him as he fights for it in a foreign land where barely anybody knows or understands him, and vice versa.

Release – March 1, 2024.

Dolphin – Bae Du-ri

A local journalist, Na-young (Yuri, Girls’ Generation), from a small beach town, becomes increasingly concerned when unexpected events disrupt her peaceful existence. That’s when her brother presses on moving out of their town, and her mother is eager to sell off their cherished home. Na-young turns to bowling as a calming activity during her attempts to adjust to the circumstances.

Release – March 13, 2024.

Troll Factory – Ahn Gook-jin

Because of an editorial, he wrote that was critical of a company, reporter Im Sang-jin (Son Suk-ku) gets suspended from his job. Subsequently, he learns of a troll factory and makes a startling discovery while looking into the issue of abuse of public opinion.

Release – March 27, 2024.

Seeking the King – Won Shin-yun

The science fiction movie centers on Kim Do-jin (Koo Kyo-hwan), a public health center physician posted to a village in the demilitarized zone. He and the villagers find themselves in an unusual predicament when they come across a massive robot in 1980—a time when the military regime in South Korea was at odds with the people.

The Roundup: Punishment – Heo Myung-haeng

The Outlaws (2017), The Roundup (2022), and The Roundup: No Way Out (2023) are the predecessors of this fourth entry in the Roundup series. In this operation to capture the head of an online gambling company, an ex-mercenary, Lieutenant Ma Seok-do (Ma Dong-seok, aka Don Lee), of the Seoul Police Agency Metropolitan Investigation, joins the Cyber Investigation Team, stoking his desire for power while interacting with lawbreakers.

Escape – Lee Jong-pil

Sergeant Im Kyu-nam (Lee Je-hoon), a North Korean, is desperate to move to South Korea and start over there, but to fulfill his wish, he must cross the demilitarized zone. Ri Hyun-Sang (Koo Gyo-hwan), an officer in the State Security Department of North Korea, consequently begins pursuing Kyu-nam. When he blocks another soldier in his attempt to escape, Kyu-nam is caught. As he is about to be executed, Hyun-sang finds out that Kyu-nam is someone he knew as a child, so instead of chastising him, Hyun-sang chooses to make Kyu-nam a hero who captured a deserter.

Mission Cross – Lee Myung-hoon

A devoted househusband and erstwhile special officer, Gang-mu (Hwang Jung-min), keeps his past from his feisty crime investigator wife, Mi-sun (Yum Jung-ah). When an enigmatic Hee-ju (Jeon Hye-jin) shows up out of the blue, Mi-sun assumes Gang-mu has an extramarital affair. As ensues, Mi-sun starts tracking him, and, along the trail, they run into unanticipated events.

Uprising – Kim Sang-man

In this period thriller, the formidable swordsman Cheon Yeong (Gang Dong-won) and his master Jong-ryeo (Park Jeong-min), the son of the highest-ranking Joseon military official and the most trusted military officer to King Seonjo, cross paths as rivals again after having previously been childhood friends.

Release – Slated for release in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Officer Black Belt – Jason Kim

Kim Woo-bin stars as martial arts virtuoso Lee Jung-do in this gripping action film. When a probationer attacks a martial arts officer, Jung-do defends him and covers for him for a while, setting the stage for the narrative’s events. Helping in physically hazardous situations is part of this temporary job description. The exceptional combat skills of Jund-do are recognized, thereby giving him the chance to begin working as a martial arts officer.

The Great Flood – Kim Byung-woo

The Great Flood is another post-apocalyptic epic from the galaxy of Korean cinema. It portrays how a massive flood results in a global emergency. At this point, human resource security employee Hee Jo (Park Hae-soo) strives to save AI development researcher Anna (Kim Da-mi) from the impending disaster, while people are fighting for their lives, homes are sinking, and chaos reigns. What exactly makes her so important is the question at hand.
