The best nursing bras help give new moms the freedom to whip out a breast at a moment’s notice to feed a very hungry baby. And, sorry, but your prepregnancy fave probably isn’t going to cut it, since breasts become heavier with increased blood volume, bodily fluids, and, of course, baby’s dinner, says New York–based doula and Motherfigure adviser Robin Douthit. They may also be more sensitive to materials like underwire and even excess padding.
Luckily, there are plenty of designs to choose from, like T-shirt bras with removable pads, moisture-wicking sports bras that you can pull down, lace bralettes with detachable nursing clips, and, yes, even a few with underwire if you just can’t quit it. We know too much choice can be overwhelming, especially if this is your first shot at motherhood and breastfeeding. So we went to women who have been there—15 moms (slash designers, writers, bloggers, podcast hosts, and chefs)—to find out which brands and bra styles worked best for them.
