2024 Grammys: Arctic Monkeys, Lana Del Rey, Boygenius, and More Nominated for Best Alternative Music Album

The 2024 Grammy Award nominations are here, and that means five acts are vying for Best Alternative Music Album. The nominees are Arctic Monkeys, Boygenius, Gorillaz, Lana Del Rey, and PJ Harvey. See all of the 2024 Grammy nominations here.

Arctic Monkeys are recognized for their seventh studio album, The Car. The band is also up for Best Alternative Music Performance (for “Body Paint”) and Best Rock Performance (for “Sculptures of Anything Goes”). Last year, Arctic Monkeys were nominated for Best Alternative Music Performance for The Car’s lead single, “There’d Better Be a Mirrorball,” but the Grammy went to Wet Leg for “Chaise Lounge.” Arctic Monkeys are now nine-time Grammy nominees, but they have yet to win an award.

Boygenius are among the most-nominated acts at the 2024 Grammy Awards. For their debut album, The Record, Boygenius got nominations for Best Alternative Music Album and Album of the Year. The group also got nominated for Record of the Year, Best Rock Performance, and Best Rock Song for “Not Strong Enough” and Best Alternative Music Performance for “Cool About It.” In addition, the engineers behind The Record (including Illuminati Hotties’ Sarah Tudzin) are up for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. Boygenius’ Phoebe Bridgers has one more nomination than her bandmates, scoring a nod for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for the SZA collaboration “Ghost in the Machine.”

Gorillaz’s 2024 Best Alternative Music Album nomination is for Cracker Island. It’s the first time since the 2018 Grammys that Gorillaz have been nominated. Gorillaz have won just one Grammy, Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals for “Feel Good Inc.” in 2006. While Gorillaz are not the official nominees, Dom Dolla’s remix of the band’s “New Gold” is up for Best Remixed Recording.

Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd is up for Best Alternative Music Album and Album of the Year. The record’s “Candy Necklace,” featuring Jon Batiste, is up for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and standout “A&W” got nods for Song of the Year and Best Alternative Music Performance. Del Rey collaborator Jack Antonoff is nominated for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, and his work on Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd helped him score the nod.

Best Alternative Music Album is the lone category in which PJ Harvey is nominated at the 2024 Grammy Awards, and the nod comes for I Inside the Old Year Dying. Harvey was nominated for seven previous Grammys, most recently for The Hope Six Demolition Project at the 2017 Grammys.

The 2023 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album went to Wet Leg for Wet Leg. Follow along with all of Pitchfork’s coverage of the 2024 Grammy Awards.
