The Simpsons joked about a Cypress Hill collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra back in 1996, and now it’s finally coming true.
There may be some truth to the joke that it’s hard to be original when The Simpsons has done just about everything over the 35 years the show has been on the air. Back in 1996, the show joked about Cypress Hill accidentally ordering the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) while under the influence during the “Homerpalooza” episode. And now, 28 years later, that collaboration has finally become a reality.
On Wednesday, July 10, the legendary hip-hop group hit the stage with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. There, they performed “a special rendition” of Cypress Hill’s 1993 album, Black Sunday, “as well as other hits from their extensive back-catalog” alongside the orchestra. Performances included the group’s hits “Insane in the Brain” and “I Wanna Get High.”
“It’s been something that we’ve talked about for many years since The Simpsons episode first aired,” B-Real told the BBC during rehearsals for the one-night-only performance. “So it’s very special for us. And it’s coming off the heels of our 30th anniversary for our Black Sunday album.” Cypress Hill admitted this event was “one of those checklist moments” in their storied career.
In The Simpsons episode, singer-songwriter Peter Frampton was the one originally trying to book the orchestra before Cypress Hill beat him to it. In real life, Cypress Hill says they wanted him to attend the highly anticipated show.
“Yes, actually, we’ve been trying to invite him,” B-Real told the BBC. “We’ve never met him before, but we thought it would be a kick to invite the legendary Peter Frampton,” he continued. The group added that had it not been for The Simpsons episode, their collaboration with the orchestra probably wouldn’t have happened at all.
“We’ve played a lot of historical venues throughout our 32 years of making music — we’re not only playing with the LSO, but we’re playing in their house, the most prestigious place to play,” concluded B-Real.
