A year exactly after the project was first announced comes the news today that arthouse distributor darling A24 will team with Kojima Productions on the live-action film adaptation of gaming auteur Hideo Kojima’s 2019 video game “Death Stranding”.
The game is set in a world after the eponymous cataclysmic event which led to destructive and nightmarish supernatural creatures roaming the Earth and society left devastated and on the brink of collapse.
Players take on the role of Sam Bridges (Norman Reedus), a courier delivering supplies to isolated colonies and reconnecting them via a wireless communications network.
Mads Mikkelsen, Lea Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, Troy Baker, Lindsay Wagner, and filmmakers Nicolas Winding Refn and Guillermo del Toro all lent their voices and likenesses to the game which.
As previously reported, the story will be set within the same universe as the game and will introduce new elements and characters. A new synopsis released today suggests it’ll serve as something of a prequel – delving into the mysteries surrounding the event itself.
In announcing the news, Kojima said in a statement:
“A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago, their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other. The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years. Now, we are making a ‘Death Stranding’ movie together.”
There are a lot of ‘game adaptation films’ out there but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a ‘Death Stranding’ universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film, it will be born.”
Kojima and Alex Lebovici will produce. The game has been played by over sixteen million players worldwide since its 2019 launch as a PlayStation exclusive (it came to PC last year). A second game is now in development.
