Actors, Directors Respond To Writers Deal

With the finish line of negotiations reached for the writer’s guild, talk has turned to what happens next. As of Sunday night, writer’s guild picketing has been suspended as the guild’s contract approval and ratification process takes place.

The guild’s leaders are expected to vote on Tuesday on the final pact. Should votes be approved, the contract will then be sent out for ratification by WGA’s 11,000 members. They would also vote on whether to lift the restraining order and end the strike at a certain date and time pending ratification.

The actor’s union SAG-AFTRA, which has been on strike since July 14th, congratulated the WGA and said in a statement they “remain committed to achieving the necessary terms for our members.”

They added that they “urge the studio and streamer CEOs and the AMPTP to return to the table and make the fair deal that our members deserve and demand.”

With the writer’s strike coming to a close, attention has turned towards the AMPTP to keep the momentum going and get the stand-off with the actor’s union resolved.

The director’s guild concurred in a statement congratulating the WGA and adding: “It’s time for the AMPTP to get back to the table with SAG-AFTRA and address the needs of performers.”

It’s expected some of the elements that were worked out in the negotiations with the WGA, such as a new-model streaming residual formula, might be able to be carried over to the SAG-AFTRA talks.

Meanwhile, producers and executives have already reportedly been inquiring about the availability of stages and other production resources in readiness to return to work when they can.
