Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways Is a Fresh Take on the Formula
One omission from the incredible Resident 4 remake was the Ada Wong story. A fan-favourite, the additional content gave a new perspective on events of the main campaign to perfectly conclude the tale. Announced as DLC and launching with a big Mercenaries update, I got a chance to have a sneak peak to see what’s in store for us when it launches on September 21st.
Instantly, it’s clear to see that Ada is much more agile than Leon. With her grappling gun, she can zip across the terrain to attack the onslaught of enemies. Flying across the environment to bury a flying kick into a foe’s face looks awesome and gets me excited for this new take on familiar set pieces. In addition to this, you can also use the grapple to reach higher ground which opens up a whole host of new opportunities. This means verticality becomes a viable option giving more methods to escape. While it does seem to re-tread aspects from the main campaign, the new gameplay mechanic helps give Separate Ways its own identity.
A New Way to Fight
The classic El Gigante boss fight was shown and highlights the differences in gameplay. With Leon, you need to avoid his strikes, scurrying from left to right. Ada’s approach to the battle is vastly different. The footage shows the heroine, flying from rooftop to rooftop pummelling the beast with bullets from up high. This gives insight to how the DLC will allow you tackle scenarios in new ways.
Even though Ada’s story intertwines with Leon, her adventure is unique. Central to the DLC is her relationship with the iconic antagonist, Wesker. While only snippets of the story have been released, it’s safe to say that this will follow the same beats of the original. Similar to the main campaign, new elements will freshen up the experience but remain true to the original.
The Resident Evil 4 remake made the controversial decision to redesign characters and reimagine the statue sequence. Due to this, it is completely possible that the Separate Ways DLC alters segments to improve the gameplay or narrative. There are a number of paths that Capcom could go with the story and I hope they expand on the original. Ada is a brilliant character and fans want to see bigger adventures that feature her. Based on the footage shown, I can’t wait to see what they do with Separate Ways. We don’t have to wait long as the DLC drops September 21st on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series S/X and PC.
