Alec Baldwin’s “Rust” Movie Shooting: Armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed Faces 18-Month Prison Term for Involuntary Manslaughter

Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer sentenced armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed to 18 months in jail after finding her guilty of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the fatal shooting on the “Rust” set.

Hutchins lost her life in a tragic incident that occurred on October 21, 2021. Gutierrez Reed, who was responsible for the firearms on the set, had already spent around a month in jail and would be serving the maximum sentence, which is 18 months.

During sentencing, Judge Sommer mainly rebuked Gutierrez Reed’s behavior, most specifically her comments in jailhouse calls, and depicted the very serious nature of the offense. He singled out Gutierrez Reed’s role as the armorer, thus bound to ensure the weapons were secure from harm and also for the tragic results.

Following her sentencing, Gutierrez Reed told the judge she was guilty and asked for probation, citing her job and her involvement in wanting to produce something worthwhile for society.

Family representatives for Halyna Hutchins shared poignant statements in which they expressed how deeply distraught the family was and how the loss was leaving them shattered.

Testimony in the trial came from, among others, weapons experts and crew members. According to the prosecution, Gutierrez Reed was remiss as an armorer, with a hand in the sad outcome. Gutierrez Reed’s lawyer said that his client didn’t see herself as guilty and that, in support of a plea by the prosecutors, there wasn’t enough evidence to indict her on manslaughter.
