Ambré is using her “Magnolia Initiative” to help New Orleans youth for the holidays and beyond.
She described the program as a “call to action” to provide resources to children and teens in foster care. The artist, who also grew up in foster care, has ambitious plans for the program. The GRAMMY Award-winning singer spoke to VIBE about their most recent event. She even mentioned the possibility of involving other artists to help nurture the kid’s artistic dreams.
“[The Magnolia Initiative] has been something I’ve thought about since I was a kid, but the actual process of making it come to life has only been a couple of years,” she detailed of the journey. “We partnered with [nonprofit] Pay Away on our first event in October to launch the initiative. We [also] worked alongside the New Orleans Department of Children and Family Services to provide a creative art workshop and backpacks filled with essentials to the youth in the system.
“Growing up in foster care, I know how important it is that these kids get support and resources, and I’m grateful to be able to give a little something back,” she added. “I really would like to create some kind of summer camp or art school where the kids can have somewhere to go and learn about whatever artistic thing that may interest them from some great artists.”
Elsewhere in the conversation, the “Catch-Up” artist discussed her latest EP, who’s loving you? She talked about the project’s original title and what she learned crafting the work. “One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to be fearless and to try new things.” As for the EP’s intentions, Ambré thrived to make it “personal to the listener.”
“Originally, it was titled B-sides, and that’s kind of the feel I wanted it to have. I wanted it to feel like the deep cuts that everyone loves on a project. I didn’t want to think too much about the creation of it and just kind of go where the songs took me” she explained.
“I always like to ask questions in my music because it makes art feel more conversational and it can make it more personal to the listener. I can create a world but as a listener, how does it reflect yours?”
