When Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” film was first announced, one of the more common questions circled around the film’s inclusion of Danish Europop band Aqua’s iconic 1997 song “Barbie Girl”.
The questions intensified after the first official photo was released last May, but were quickly shot down when of the band’s managers confirmed “the song will not be used in the movie”.
That wasn’t a surprise considering after the song first became a phenomenon, it was the subject of lawsuits between Aqua and Mattel which were ultimately thrown out in court.
When the film finally arrived last month, it included a remix of the song with new verse vocals from Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice added to the mix.
Today, two members of Aqua have broken their silence on the song’s use in the film. Lead singer Lene Nystrøm tells The Guardian they assumed the song wouldn’t be included but then the remix came together fast:
“We thought it would be like butter on bacon. We totally understood that they wanted something fresh and new. And then, just two months ago, we were asked to do the [Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice] collab. It happened really quickly.”
Fellow member Rene Dif adds that the collaboration was seen as them officially making peace with Mattel, adding: “It’s just nice to have Mattel come to us and say: ‘Hey, that’s cool.’”
The song and the film have been big successes, with the latter still sitting atop the world box-office.
