Arnold Schwarzenegger says “The Terminator” is ‘no longer a fantasy’ with the rise of artificial intelligence in real life and the impact the technology will have on the world in the years to come.
Artificial intelligence has been in widespread use for years in various fields, including everything from national defense to video game graphics. More recently, Hollywood has been using the tech to clean up aging recorded material or even create opening credits as was done with Marvel’s “Secret Invasion”.
The 75-year-old action film giant and former Governor appeared at the “An Evening with Arnold Schwarzenegger” event in Los Angeles on Wednesday, where he heaped praise on filmmaker James Cameron and his prescient 1984 film.
That movie, of course, takes place in a world where an A.I.-driven defense network known as Skynet becomes self-aware and has conquered humanity. What was once a frightening but far-off idea is becoming a more legitimate frightening possibility, says Schwarzenegger:
“Today, everyone is frightened of it, of where this is gonna go. And in this movie, in ‘Terminator,’ we talk about the machines becoming self-aware and they take over… Now over the course of decades, it has become a reality. So it’s not any more fantasy or kind-of futuristic. It is here today. And so this is the extraordinary writing of Jim Cameron.
He’s just such an extraordinary writer and he’s such an unbelievable director, this is again, one of those things that I wish I could take credit for this movie. I can only take credit of the character that I played and the way I played it. But I mean, he has created this character. He has written it so well, he’s written the movie so well, and that’s why he is, you know, the number one director in the world.”
The comments follow on from ones from Christopher Nolan earlier this month, who told Wired magazine that the key problem with A.I. is that the tech could allow those who wield it to “evade responsibility for their actions”.
Schwarzenegger is coming off the well-regarded and well-received three-part Netflix documentary series “Arnold”.
