In a pre-dawn operation earlier today, Bali authorities intercepted an illicit attempt to smuggle eleven green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) bound for the culinary market in Denpasar. The incident unfolded at the Java-Bali sea crossing monument in Cekik, Gilimanuk Village, Jembrana.
Agus Budi Santosa, the Head of the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Center (KSDA), shed light on the operation. He explained that the turtles, considered protected species, were transported by sea before being offloaded at the location, slated for further ground transport to Denpasar.
The intervention came on the heels of a tip-off from concerned citizens, highlighting the rampant illicit trade in these safeguarded creatures. The Bali Water and Air Police Directorate swiftly acted on this information, leading to the apprehension of a single suspect along with the seizure of 11 green sea turtles.
“This arrest is based on a report from the public regarding the rampant circulation or trade of protected species, namely Chelonia mydas (green sea turtles) for consumption in the Bali region,” stated Santosa.
Currently, the suspected perpetrator is in custody at the Bali Water and Air Police Command Post in Benoa, Denpasar, awaiting further legal proceedings. They face charges under Law Number 5 of 1990 Concerning the Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and Ecosystems.
Meanwhile, the rescued turtles have found refuge at the Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC) in Denpasar. Here, they will receive the necessary care and attention, including health examinations and tagging.
