British broadcaster The BBC and U.S. streamer Netflix are teaming up for a true story drama series on the Lockerbie bombing terror attack.
Four days before Christmas in 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was flying from Heathrow to JFK when a bomb exploded in its cargo hold over the small Scottish town of Lockerbie.
In the incident, two hundred seventy people died – 243 passengers, 16 crew, and 11 residents from wreckage that crashed in a residential street. It is still considered the worst terror attack ever on British soil.
The factual drama will examine the joint investigation of the incident by Scottish and American authorities, including the Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary and the FBI, and the impact on the people of the town it’s named after.
World Productions (“Line of Duty”) will produce the six-part series that filmmaker Adam Morane-Griffiths, MGM Television and Night Train Media developed.
Author Jonathan Lee and Scottish screenwriter Gillian Roger Park (“The Young Offenders”) will co-write the series using extensive interviews conducted by Morane-Griffiths with investigative agencies. Michael Keillor (“Best Interests”) will direct.
The project is entirely separate from Sky and Peacock’s series “Lockerbie”, which has been stuck in development and delayed.
That series has Oscar-nominated director Jim Sheridan and his daughter Kirsten Sheridan attached to write and is expected to focus more on one family’s search for justice surrounding the bombing.
