If you’re at all familiar with The Idol, the recently wrapped five-episode series by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye about a pop star seduced by a cult leader, you probably know that the original idea for the show was pretty different from what viewers ended up seeing. The final product is glossy, graphic, and dark. It was shot mostly at Tesfaye’s house and features Lily-Rose Depp as the titular pop idol, Jocelyn, deep into her bad-girl phase (post–mental breakdown, as well).
But if you read the Rolling Stone article about the very messy making of the show, you know that there was a nearly completed version of the series directed by Amy Seimetz that was more “female gaze”-y and blatantly satirical (to be fair, the Levinson version does have some hysterically funny scenes, though the tone is all over the place). Now that season one of The Idol has finished airing, it looks like someone involved with the production is leaking pictures from the set of the first version of the show, in which Jocelyn is less “Slave 4 U” and more “Baby One More Time.”
People on Twitter are mourning the could-have-been version of The Idol, which was, aesthetically at least, a lot more fun. In pictures of Jocelyn’s original bedroom, she’s surrounded by pink merchandise and life-sized cut-outs. As one Twitter user put it, “We could have had it all.”
Beyond set design, it looks as though characters were cut or recast. Here, we see, maybe, one of Jocelyn’s friends?
Though, yes, Tesfaye and Levinson were involved from the beginning, many are speculating that it was the departure of Seimetz that led to the show’s…iffy final product. Or put another way:
