Hosted by Mayanne Mak (麥美恩), talkshow Mayanne Lil Trumpet (transliterated) aired its final episode on April 19, with Bob Lam (林盛斌), Mimi Chu (朱咪咪), Jinny Ng (吳若希) and Benjamin Yuen (袁偉豪) as guests. Chatting about what a unique local lingo “kam lou* (襟撈)” encompasses – which roughly means grit or resilience, they brought up 3 stars – Aaron Kwok (郭富城), David Beckham and Moses Chen (陳豪), as celebrities who exemplify the positive trait! (‘lou’ means earning a living)
Their Take on the Popular Workplace Term
Asked about the popular Cantonese slang term, the guests shared their opinions – Bob defined it as “Being able to ‘suffer’, putting in the extra effort, and not afraid to be ‘taken advantage of’”, while Mimi felt that it means being flexible as well, such as throwing in an extra song during a performance if the audience would like to, despite the concert time being up. Jinny highlighted how having a good working atmosphere was also an expression of “kam lo”, while Benjamin concurred as he mentioned having a serious work attitude and being able to gel with everyone harmoniously, when the occasion demands.
Not Putting One’s Opinions Online
Confessing that he is not a good example of the popular slang word, Benjamin reflected on his past experience of being on the receiving end of negative comments after tying the know with Boey Cheung (張寶兒). While he used to mind these harsh criticisms greatly, he has already stopped taking such criticisms to heart. “Having my own opinions is fine, but it’s best that I not express them, surely not online, as everyone will have different interpretations of what you mean even if it’s a simple phrase,”
While he used to feel maligned and hurt by the criticisms heaped on him despite the hard work he has put in, Ben has since wisened up as he says, “Of course, that was a phase, now if you ask me, life is actually full of beauty, having kids and being able to enjoy playing with them, makes me less concerned about life’s losses and victories, and about what others say, it’s actually nothing,” Mayanne, Mimi, Bob and Jinny immediately commented that Ben seems much more relaxed now, to which he quipped,” If I’m still none the wiser, then I really can’t continue making a living!”
