Beyonce’s concert film “Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce” is set to top the box-office with the biggest early December opening since the Tom Cruise-led “The Last Samurai” made $24.3 million back in 2003.
The film is reportedly on track to earn $21-24 million in its opening weekend following an $11.5 million opening day take on Friday which includes $5 million in Thursday previews.
It’s a number in line with most concert film openings as opposed to the younger-skewing Taylor Swift which launched to a gargantuan $92.8 million domestically. “Renaissance” is also rolling out overseas where it’s expected to take in a further $20 million.
Like with “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” exhibitor AMC Theatres is distributing the film which has landed even more stellar scores than Swift’s film did – a rare A+ CinemaScore from audience exit polls and a 100% from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
That’s not the only big winner this weekend. Toho’s Japanese-language “Godzilla Minus One” snagged $4.7 million on Friday and is tracking for a strong $9-11 million weekend gross and third place rank with men under 34 in particular rushing to see the film.
The film is similarly drawing rave reviews with an ‘A’ CinemaScore from audience exit polls, and a 97% from critics/98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
It will come in just behind holdover “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” which will fall 45% in its third weekend for a $16 million second-place result.
The news for everyone else isn’t good. Angel Studios’ faith-based “The Shift,” a modern retelling of the Book of Job, isn’t proving to be a “Sound of Freedom” juggernaut with a soft weekend debut of $4.3 million.
John Woo’s dialogue-free “Silent Night” isn’t working out either, that film heading for a pitiful $2.5 million weekend with reviews being mixed and a woeful ‘C’ CinemaScore handed out.
Things are just as bad for last week’s newcomers. Both Disney Animation’s “Wish” and Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” are set to plummet in their second weekends with drops of 63% and 66% respectively.
Both titles and “Trolls Band Together” are fighting it out for fourth place with all heading for $7 million openings.
