Netflix has handed out a second-season renewal order for the recently released animated drama series “Blue Eye Samurai”.
Released in early November, the eight-episode series takes place in Edo-period Japan. The story follows Mizu (voiced by Maya Erskine), a mixed-race master of the sword who lives a life in disguise in order to seek the deliverance of revenge.
Mizu is targeting four men in Japan at the time of her birth and sets off to kill them – one of whom might be her father. The series was created by Michael Green and Amber Noizumi who also serve as executive producers and writers.
In the announcement of the renewal, the pair have released a statement:
“When we started this project, we made a commitment to take this very personal story set in Edo-period Japan and bring it to life in the most authentic and beautiful way possible. Our animators, historians, musicians, martial artists and voice cast made this a reality beyond our expectations.
We are thankful to our entire team and to our viewers from all over the world who have shown such passion for Mizu and her path of revenge. Mizu has a lot more blood to spill! We are deeply grateful to our incredible partners at Netflix for letting the journey continue.”
Also lending their voices to the first season were George Takei (Seki), Masi Oka (Ringo), Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (The Swordmaker), Brenda Song (Akemi), Darren Barnet (Taigen), Randall Park (Heiji Shindo), Kenneth Branagh (Abijah Fowler), Stephanie Hsu (Ise), Ming-Na Wen (Madame Kaji), Harry Shum Jr. (Takayoshi) and Mark Dacascos (Chiaki).
Blue Spirit handled the animation for the series which is reportedly envisioned with a potential four-season run in mind. The series has been highly acclaimed and is making several critical best of 2023 year-end lists.
