“Parasite” and “Memories of Murder” director Bong Joon-ho will reportedly start production on his next project, an animated feature about deep sea creatures, in the second half of 2024 according to Korean media (via World of Reel).

The currently untitled film is budgeted at $52 million and will reportedly be the most expensive production in Korean film history with Sony Pictures rumoured to be handling worldwide release.

Bong has reportedly been working on the screenplay since 2018 and finished it back in 2021. The story is said to deal with the relationship between deep-sea marine life and humans, but Bong is said to be keeping story details secret.

Bong will spend a good portion of the first half of 2024 finishing post-production on his Robert Pattinson-led sci-fi film “Mickey 17” which is being rumored to premiere at Cannes.

Bong was rumored to be considering another live-action film after “Mickey 17,” but is now going with this instead. CG animation for the untitled animated deep sea film is being handled by Korean VFX company Force Creative Party.
