Beloved “Snowpiercer” and “Memories of Murder” director Bong Joon-ho’s new sci-fi film “Mickey 17” might be undergoing a delay – all in the name of a higher-profile launch.
World of Reel reports according to their sources, Warners is looking to push back the film by two months from March 29th 2024 to a late May release with plans for a splashy premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
The move would make sense as Bong’s 2019 dark comedy film “Parasite” launched at Cannes where it won the Palme d’Or before going on to win Best Picture and Best Director at the Oscars. His earlier film “Okja” also had a Cannes debut.
Earlier this year Cannes chief Thierry Fremaux reportedly advised Bong in a masterclass not to rush in regards to editing the film so as to be ready for a Cannes 2024 debut.
If the report is true, it would mean Warners could have a very busy time on the Croisette next year with George Miller’s “Furiosa” also rumored to be premiering there.
Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun and Naomi Ackie star in the sci-fi feature based on Edward Ashton’s novel. The story follows Mickey, a disposable employee sent to colonise an ice world, and soon realises that his body can regenerate after death but with his memories still preserved.
