Twenty-four years after they unleased “28 Days Later” in cinemas, filmmakers Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are set to re-team for a revival of the series.
THR reports that the pair are reuniting for “28 Years Later,” a new film that won’t just be another sequel (ala 2007’s “28 Weeks Later” which they only produced).
Instead, it is reportedly being lined up as the start of a potential whole new trilogy of films, making this sound like something more akin to 2018’s “Halloween” revival.
Boyle is attached to direct the first installment with Garland set to write all three, with both producing. The pair have publicly teased the idea of a potential sequel over the years but nothing ever seemed to go beyond the idea stage.
Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice would also produce. The budget for each film is tipped to be in the $75 million range. The package is reportedly expected to hit studios, streamers and other potential buyers later this week.
Cillian Murphy starred in the original as a man who wakes up from a coma in a London hospital. He walks out to find a desolate, post-apocalyptic collapse due to a virus that turned its victims into raging killers. Naomie Harris and Christopher Eccleston co-starred.
The film revitalized the zombie horror genre and propelled the careers of all involved.
