Oscar winner Brendan Fraser has signed on to star in the comedy-drama “Rental Family” for Searchlight Pictures.
The project hails from “Beef” director Hikari who is also co-writing with Stephen Blahut, and produces Eddie Vaisman, Shin Yamaguchi and Julia Lebedev.
The story follows a down-and-out American actor (Fraser) living in Tokyo, Japan. One day he is hired as a token American guy for a Japanese rental family company.
This leads him on an unexpected journey of self-discovery through the roles he plays in other people’s lives. The project marks Fraser’s first leading role since his Oscar-winning turn in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale” earlier this year.
Fraser was last seen in a memorable small role as a loud defense attorney in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon”. He most recently shot Max Barbakow’s comedy “Brothers” co-starring Josh Brolin, Glenn Close and Peter Dinklage.
Filming aims to begin this spring in Japan. Blahut and Tomo Koiziu are executive producing. No word on a potential release date for the film.
