Martin Scorsese’s period epic “Killers of the Flower Moon” is an astonishing true story saga about the real-life atrocities carried out against the Osage Nation in the 1920s.
Over three-and-a-half hours, but well-paced, the tone is decidedly uncomfortable and sinister as we watch greedy white men systematically murder prominent Osage figures for their oil money with little reprisal.
It’s a film built on strong, layered performances from Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone and Leonardo DiCaprio. There’s also a ton of character actors in smaller roles who have a few minutes of screen time.
In amongst all those is Brendan Fraser who comes off his Oscar win with a small appearance in the last hour of the film as the De Niro character’s attorney W.S. Hamilton.
It’s seven minutes of screen time in total, and in that time he turns in an over-the-top take that, according to The Daily Beast, has been compared to Foghorn Leghorn as he lectures, shouts and chews the scenery, yet is also part of a crucial plot turn.
The role has sparked debate on social media, some criticising it as a jarring difference to the rest of the film whereas others have praised it, saying Frasier “understood the assignment” and Scorsese knew exactly how he wanted that character to come across.
