On September 29, police brutally beat 24-year-old Le’Keian Woods during a traffic stop in Jacksonville, Florida. Shocking video footage captured by a bystander depicts Woods being subjected to a brutal assault by several officers while he was restrained in handcuffs, leading to severe facial swelling and bleeding.
The video was released by Woods’ attorney, Harry Daniels, depicting a horrifying scene of police officers forcefully slamming Woods’ head to the ground. The officers were seen restraining him on the grass, and one officer propped him up against his leg.
Despite being handcuffed and in a defenseless state, Woods struggled to stand up. According to Daniels, Woods’ only offense was a seatbelt violation.
Woods’ attorney further revealed that the victim suffered severe injuries, including a concussion, leading him to be hospitalized. Daniels emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating:
“If this video of the officers repeatedly assaulting Le’Keian, slamming his head into the ground and tossing him around like a ragdoll while he’s handcuffed and defenseless isn’t enough to convince you that these officers need to be off the street, just look at Le’Keian’s face. He looks like he just went 12 rounds with a professional boxer.”
Records indicate that Woods was facing several charges, including armed trafficking of methamphetamine, armed trafficking of cocaine, and violation of probation. The assault on Woods has stirred public outcry, with his family members and community gathering outside the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office on October 1 to demand justice.
Woods’ mother, Natassia Woods, expressed her shock and disbelief at the inhumane treatment her son endured, comparing it to the consequences faced for harming animals:
“I was like, I couldn’t believe they would do that to a person. Because if you kick a dog, or do something to an animal, you going down. So it’s okay to beat a human down like that, and there ain’t no pressure?” she said.
There has been no confirmation on how the police officers will be disciplined.
Sadly, Le’Keian Woods’ case is not an isolated incident. Another Black man, Tyre Nichols, suffered a similar fate at the hands of police officers. Nichols, a 29-year-old Memphis native, was violently beaten by five police officers during a traffic stop, leading to his death.
