Calvin Harris sold his publishing catalog to Vine Alternative Investments in October 2020 in a deal rumored to be worth around $100 million. Now the catalog is changing hands again as Shamrock Capital Advisors snaps up a broad tranche of IP.
DJ Calvin Harris sold his catalog that includes more than 150 songs and collaborations with some of the world’s biggest stars, including Rihanna, Dua Lipa, Sam Smith, Frank Ocean, Ariana Grande, Big Sean, Khalid, Pharrell Williams, and Travis Scott. Sony/ATV continued administration services for the catalog.
Now more than four years later, Shamrock Capital Advisors has engineered a large deal including film, television show, and song rights from Vine Alternative Investments in New York. Shamrock inked a servicing agreement with HighPoint Media Advisors, a newly formed firm to provide consulting services related to the collection and the deal.
“It’s the largest single transaction that we’ve done in the content strategy,” Shamrock Partner Patrick Russo told the Wall Street Journal. Russo adds that the acquisition brings the theme’s assets under management to roughly $2.4 billion.
The collection Shamrock is acquiring from Vine Investments includes ownership interests of more than 550 feature films, 2,000+ hours of TV shows, and 450 songs. Russo says with this acquisition, Shamrock’s content rights holdings have been bolstered to more than 1,000 films, 3,000+ hours of TV shows, and more than 20,000 musical compositions. Shamrock is backing the deal out of its Capital Content Fund III, which closed with more than $600 million.
Shamrock traces its roots to the 1970s when Roy Disney set up a predecessor firm as a family investment office. The fund has since evolved into an independent institutional firm, with Shamrock Capital raising multiple funding rounds across strategies that includes private equity, intellectual property rights, royalties, and debt. As of March 2024, Shamrock manages around $4.5 billion in total assets.
