Every few months, rumors emerge that James Cameron’s 1989 underwater sci-fi classic “The Abyss” will finally make its way to 4K UHD (or at the very least Blu-ray).
Most of the time those rumors never pan out as Cameron’s commitments to the “Avatar” sequels seem to have kept him busy from doing the restoration work required.
An HD transfer of the theatrical cut did appear on HBO Max at one point, but that was from an older job done many years back that never hit disc.
Then the other week, NEON announced a screening of the superior ‘special edition’ version of the film at BeyondFest with Cameron himself attending.
Well, that screening just took place tonight at a packed cinema in Los Angeles where Cameron came out to a standing ovation from the crowd following the showing of a new 4K DCP (Digital Cinema Print).
In the Q&A afterwards, Cameron didn’t announce any disc or streaming release dates but did say he has completed all his work on the 4K UHD Blu-ray, which is indeed real and should be out relatively soon:
“I’ve completed the transfer, all the mastering is done, I think it drops pretty soon like… in a couple of months or something like that. So it’s out of my hands at this point.
There’s a lot of added material that they’re sticking in there, and will be available on streaming simultaneously. But I didn’t just want to look at the old HD transfer. I wanted to do it right.”
The comments come as Paramount Home Media Distribution officially announced the 4K UHD release of Cameron’s “Titanic” today, with that title hitting shelves in December.
It marks the second of four Cameron films which producer Jon Landau teased back in March would hit 4K UHD disc this year. The first was “Avatar” which arrived back in June. The other two? “The Abyss” and “True Lies” for which we still await dates.
