Cassie has filed a lawsuit accusing Sean “Diddy” Combs of physical rape, abuse, and sex trafficking. The New York Times reports that the singer’s suit was filed in Manhattan’s Federal District Court on Thursday (Nov. 16) under New York State’s Adult Survivors Act, which allows sexual abuse victims to file civil suits against their alleged assailants after the statute of limitations expired.
The bombshell suit sent ripples through the industry and social media alike. Outpourings of love and support for Cassie Ventura arrived almost immediately. Meanwhile, other people took the time to dig up previous reports involving Diddy or offer jokes at the mogul’s expense.
“Damn brother love, brother love, brother love, you out here looking CRAZY AS A MF,” 50 Cent quipped across his social channels, with a picture of himself looking confused. “This xweet was posted 11 years ago almost to the date,” reporter Philip Lewis quote xweeted before redirecting his followers to another message from an inactive account, which read, “Diddy and Kid Kudi fightn I’m the club! Lol ova Cassie!! LOL now that’s funny.”
For context, the lawsuit included Cassie’s anecdote about Combs being jealous of men who may or may not have dated her. One of the men named in the legal doc was Kid Cudi. Ventura alleged that the entertainer blew up Cudi’s car out of burning jealousy.
Another account responded to the shocking news with hope that Cassie’s story could bring about a reckoning in the industry. The person hypothesized that Hip-Hop’s “Me Too” movement could be on the horizon.
“This Diddy news can be a watershed moment because the #MeToo movement hasn’t really hit the Hip-Hop industry the way it’s hit others. People have been able to maneuver freely. This might be what opens the doors. A lot of phone calls are probably being made right now,” they xweeted.

Additionally, a separate account pointed to Diddy’s BET Awards Lifetime Achievement speech as proof of his alleged abuse. The person called attention to the Bad Boy founder making sure to thank her during his “dark times.” “Diddy thanking Cassie for ‘holding him down during dark times’ during his Lifetime Achievement acceptance speech at the BET Awards last year, knowing what he’s done to her is sinister,” they asserted.
Diddy’s former artists Aubrey O’Day and Dawn Richard took different approaches to the news. The latter extended her love to Cassie in a simple xweet, writing, “Praying for Cassie and her family, for peace and healing. you are beautiful and brave.”
Aubrey took to her Instagram Story, where she doubled down on her previous statements regarding Diddy. “Been trynna tell y’all for years. Prayers up for this queen @cassie,” she typed across multiple stories. “Only day ya’ll are gonna put some respect on my name when I tell you things.”
The former Danity Kane singer also sent an official statement to Rolling Stone. Aubrey stated that she stands with Cassie and hopes her lawsuit continues to shake the room.
“I am in full support of Cassie. It isn’t easy to take on one of the most powerful people in this industry and be honest about your experience with them. I know what her heart is feeling right now, because I have done so as well. May her voice bring all the others to the table, so we can start having more transparent conversations about what is actually happening behind the scenes. There is a lot more to all of our stories!”
