A common argument about Marvel Studios’ output these days is that the quality has nosedived – that what was once a consistently great track record has been tarnished by a series of duds post-Endgame.
The reality of course is a bit less extreme. Marvel’s pre-Endgame track record was hardly unblemished with more than a few notable duds (“Iron Man 2,” “Thor: The Dark World,” “The Incredible Hulk”), numerous average films, quite a few good ones, and on occasion a great one.
Post-Endgame there has definitely been a slide with far more duds and average films/series and fewer good/excellent ones. The slide isn’t as dramatic as is often made out, but even Disney has acknowledged that it is there with the blame being put on too much product in the pipeline and not enough care taken.
Someone who is emblematic of Marvel’s golden screen period is Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers/Captain America, the actor hung up the role back in 2019 with “Avengers: Endgame”.
In comments from the Emerald City Comic Con recently via fansite LaughingPlace.com, Evans was interviewed about his career and was asked about the state of superhero movies. He says:
“If it was easy, there’d be a lot more good ones – not trying to throw shade. Some Marvel projects are objectively phenomenal films.”
Evans smartly exited whilst on top of a genre not being helped by so many films these days proving mixed bags – from the masterpieces that are the animated “Spider-Verse” films to the landfill fodder of “Morbius” and “Madame Web” and the varying (and mostly bad) quality of DC over the past decade.
Marvel Studios is currently trying to correct this with a ‘soft reset’ that will see more spaced out releases and a bigger focus on quality.
