GoDigital’s Cinq Music has officially acquired the catalog of Puerto Rican songwriter and producer José Angel Hernández, better known as Flow La Movie.
Cinq, into which GoDigital injected $250 million in February, just recently announced the song-rights investment. Flow La Movie passed away in a plane crash in late 2021, and Cinq inked the newly finalized deal with his estate, which is administered by the producer’s daughter Keigelyan Hernandez.
Artists Nio Garcia and Casper Magico (who Flow La Movie had signed to his namesake label) “also participated in the sale,” with additional “collaboration from GLAD Empire,” according to Cinq.
During his decade-long career, Flow La Movie accumulated credits on several high-profile Latin works, chief among them “Te Boté.” Originally recorded by Darell as well as the mentioned Garcia and Magico, the Spanish-language track, released through the producer’s label and remixed by Bad Bunny, has accumulated north of 1.2 billion streams on Spotify alone.
The transaction also extends to commercially prominent releases such as “La Jeepeta” (recorded by Anuel AA, Garcia, and more) and Nicky Jam’s “Travesuras,” to name some. The main “La Jeepeta” upload boasts 667 million Spotify streams, compared to hundreds of millions apiece for various “Travesuras” uploads.
Cinq opted against publicly disclosing the investment’s precise terms and financials, but it’s worth reiterating the eight-figure deal the company and its parent teased back in February.
That “soon-to-be unveiled marquee catalog acquisition…includes the legendary repertoire of some of the industry’s most influential hitmakers,” the entities drove home at the time.
Returning to the Flow La Movie catalog play, Cinq took the opportunity to reiterate the body of work’s “expansive” nature and to tout its own “proven track record in Latin music.” Furthermore, president and co-founder Barry Daffurn in a statement underscored his company’s commitment to preserving Flow La Movie’s “remarkable legacy.”
“Reggaeton has been a core element of our DNA since the founding of this company,” Daffurn said. “I remember the day that ‘Te Boté’ was released and watching the remix catapult into a global phenomenon.
“We all mourned the loss of José, and we are honored to continue his legacy with the addition of his catalog to our storied portfolio. Cinq is committed to honoring his life’s work and to preserving his remarkable legacy. We have tremendous respect and admiration for him and his family, and we are looking forward to continuing to build upon the special place that he occupies in the hearts of music fans everywhere,” he concluded.
Regarding the growing reach of Latin, the genre’s U.S. recorded revenue jumped 16 percent in 2023 to hit a record $1.35 billion, according to RIAA data. Universal Music kicked off 2024 with the purchase of Saban Music Latin, and Gustavo Lopez, formerly Saban’s CEO, last month launched Globalatino Music Partners.
