Climate activists spray orange paint at UNESCO’s Stonehenge in the UK; get arrested

In a shocking act of vandalism, two climate activists in the UK were found spraying orange coloured paint at UNESCO’s Stonehenge monument. The two men were a part of a protest by Just Stop Oil and were arrested soon after. Stonehenge is an ancient UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern England and is a prime tourist attraction in the country. It is also one of the most mysterious places on Earth.

The act drew condemnation from the UK’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Labour leader Keir Starmer. They called it disgraceful and outrageous vandalism.

The incident happened just ahead of the summer solstice, an annual gathering time at the 4500-year-old stone circle. English Heritage, which manages Stonehenge, has expressed deep concern. The committee has initiated an investigation already. However, the activists claim the paint is biodegradable and it will wash away in rainwater.

Wiltshire Police confirmed the arrests, stating the individuals were apprehended on suspicion of damaging the ancient monument. Videos circulated on social media showed the activists, clad in “Just Stop Oil” attire, spraying the stones with orange cornstarch from a small canister.

The group criticised the Labour Party’s stance on oil and gas exploration licenses, urging for a complete phase-out of fossil fuels by 2030. They warned of dire consequences, asserting that failure to act decisively would lead to widespread ecological and social harm.

As political tensions heighten ahead of the upcoming election, with Labour favored to lead the government, Just Stop Oil emphasized their commitment to environmental activism. They vowed continued resistance if governments fail to implement stringent measures to combat climate change, echoing broader concerns over the planet’s future amid ongoing environmental degradation.

Just Stop Oil, formed in 2022, has gained attention across Europe for its disruptive protests against fossil fuels, aligning with their call for immediate climate action.

Stonehenge was constructed some 5000 years ago on Salisbury Plain. It still remains a mystery of human history, with some stones sourced from as far as southwest Wales. This prehistoric monument is an iconic stone circle, constructed during the late Neolithic period. It’s a marvel of ancient engineering and holds immense spiritual significance.

Composed of large standing stones, some weighing up to 25 tons, Stonehenge’s purpose and origins continue to intrigue researchers and visitors alike. It is believed to have served as a ceremonial site, possibly aligned with celestial events like the solstices.
