The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration warned commuters earlier today to steer clear of the Asoke intersection as a scheduled “car mob” protest takes shape in the area.
BMA spokesperson Lt. Gen. Chirasun Kaewsang announced that the so-called car mob had Wednesday afternoon at the busy Asoke intersection by the Terminal 21 shopping mall. The protest is a show of support for the eight-party coalition and headed toward Pheu Thai’s headquarters at 1pm.
Chirasun warns that commuters should avoid Ratchadapisek Road (from Asoke Phetchaburi to Benjakiti Park U-turn point), Sukhumvit Road (from Sukhumvit Soi 22 to Nana Intersection), and the new Phetchaburi Road inbound lane.
Metropolitan police recommend commuters avoid routes affected by the assembly and plan their travel accordingly. The authorities suggest travelers commute through Thonglor, Ekamai, Rama IV Road, Duang Phithak Road, Wireless Road, Henri Dunant Road, Phaya Thai Road, and the Chalerm Maha Nakhon Expressway.
The event, which began at noon, is a procession to gather signatures from citizens to help endorse the coalition to form a government and elect a Prime Minister before the senate’s term ends.
The protest will proceed along Sukhumvit Road to Sukhumvit Soi 55 and Phetchaburi Road and will terminate at the headquarters of the Move Forward and Pheu Thai at the Thai Summit Building and OAI Building, respectively.
Tensions remain high as protesters continue to organize rallies around Bangkok since the Move Forward party’s leader Pita Limjaroenrat failed to secure votes in a second round of voting and may even be disqualified from his MP duties. Lawmakers in the elected lower house and military-appointed Senate cited Pita’s plan to reform the controversial lese majeste law as their reason for refusing their support.
